THE VIRUS

A highly infectious, zombie-like virus has devastated the planet, leaving it up to once-renowned scientist Dr. Simon Segal to find a cure using the body of the Chimera [Evangeline] -- the only known person with immunity to the virus.

THE VIRUS ORIGIN

In 2015, Ukrainian scientists discovered that the radiation from the Chernobyl Disaster had affected nearby death cap mushrooms, causing them to release highly infectious spores. The scientists collected samples of the mushrooms to study.

It was finally introduced to the World Health Organization in 2017 when a scientist had unknowingly gone into the contamination room with a hazmat suit that had a small rip in it. The infected scientist, as a result, started to deteriorate within a matter of days. The World Health Organization worked to find a cure, but found that the virus caused by the spores were unaffected by and stronger than every other virus known to man. They were at a loss.

In 2018, a group of teenagers snuck into the WHO Headquarters in Switzerland. They came across the mushrooms and stole one, thinking it would be funny to prank their other friends with. They were caught with five being arrested and the sixth managing to get away with the sample of death cap mushroom. Thus, the radiatio amanita virus raged on.

THE VIRUS STAGES

The virus can be spread through released spores from highly decomposed (and stationary) corpses, scratches, bites, blood transfusion, and saliva.

The first signs of infection are mild, displaying common cold symptoms just hours after initial contact. This is known as the first stage.

The second stage starts when the contaminated individual begins to cough up blood. Their fever will spike to unusually high temperatures, resulting in delirium and (often) aggressive, violent paranoia.

The third stage is characterized by a docile, dazed state. Contaminated individuals are confused and often wander aimlessly, crying out for help.

The fourth stage reverts the contaminated individual to their primal instincts. They are highly volatile, infectious, and hungry.

THE VIRUS MUTATIONS

After stage four, the virus mutates in the host to keep itself alive. These mutations can be found below.

Ghouls are typical zombies. They make up for 54% of all infected and behave how you would expect.

Wailers make up 34% of all infected. When they left the third stage, they never stopped calling for help. These are the most dangerous because they lure in survivors. Aside from their calls, they behave like ghouls.

Rotters are the highly decomposed bodies. They release a mass amount of spores within a twenty mile radius of their body. They make up 10% of all infected.

Faithless refer to those whose virus mutated prematurely (often during stage two). The delirium within these individuals has escalated into a religious psychosis, making them attempt to "convert" (infect) as many people as possible. They only make up 2% of all infected

Faithless are smarter than the average infected and are able to talk despite their insanity.

SURVIVALIST GROUPS

Fort Withervale
Camp Withervale used to be the town of Leavenworth, WA. They were the first town to be overrun and eradicated in the US by the United States Contaminant Eradication Federation, often referred to as USCEF (yoo-scef).

There are about 130 Withervale residents compared to the 2,000 who lived in Leavenworth before the outbreak.

United States Contaminant Eradication Forces
The United States Contamination Eradication Federation is the only remaining governing force among the United States. There are approximately 1,600 bases among the US, all of which run themselves with a strict code.

This strict code and their lack of empathy for lone survivors and those who wish to leave USCEF have encouraged the rise of various resistance forces -- the most notable (and USCEF's direct enemy), The Jaguars.

The Jaguars
Under the new leadership of the previous Archon's niece, Lorelei Brass, the Jaguars have the biggest survivalist settlement in North America that strives by focusing on their community. Their main settlement is on the Canadian side of the border, ensuring that they remain out of USCEF's jurisdiction.

USCEF has spread propaganda about The Jaguars to ensure that US survivors remain hostile toward them, including by orchestrating the eradication of other survivor settlements and leaving their "insignia" in the aftermath of it.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

• MC is the only known person whose body rejects the radiatio amanita virus. They are immune to the virus and had been lugged around by Dr. Simon Segal after the apocalypse. They were found by Blaise Godin and Domingo Botín, who brought them back to Fort Withervale.

• The two were almost shot when Blaise found the bite mark on the immune's shoulder, but Simon was convincing enough to keep them alive. Fort Withervale is very cautious of the immune, often referring to them as "The Chimera".

• Based on Simon's calculations, there should only be four people worldwide who are immune to the virus.

• After Chimera was bitten, they were contagious for only three days. If they are bitten again, they will have to quarantine for three days while their body works on rejecting the spores.

• USCEF is aware of the possibility of immune individuals. They have been working to execute all suspected immunes because they threaten USCEF's control.

THE WASTELAND

After military dictatorship USCEF eradicates the infected and dons a new name, they take over Canada, the US, and Mexico and the nuclear power plants have blown up — leaving most of the landmass uninhabitable.

THE WASTELAND

THE WASTELAND is follows the events of THE VIRUS. The USA has eradicated the zombies from Mexico, the US, and Canada and have taken over all three landmasses. USCEF (United States Contaminant Eradication Federation) has donned a new title -- the Humanitarian Assistance Agency -- and are working toward re-educating and repopulating the nation.

The power plants went down completely before USCEF could get around to turning them back on. They blew up, leaving much of Canada, the US, and Mexico uninhabitable. These uninhabitable zones contain dangerous levels of radiation.

CHIMERA

CHIMERA is a resistance group started by Florent Godin after his father gave his life to save Florent and his brother from the USCEF attack on the Jaguars. They were nameless for a year until the only known person to be immune to the zombie virus was taken by USCEF and is presumed dead. The name chimera comes from what Fort Withervale used to call the immune.

CHIMERA’s main goal is to take down the Humanitarian Assistance Agency for their crimes against the survivors of the old world; and for the Godin boys’ personal vendetta after losing both their father and the Chimera.

Religion
Florent and Pierre have pushed the notion that the original Chimera was an angel sent down to purge the earth of sin and infection. This notion has spiraled into a religious psychosis, of sorts, and has made CHIMERA more dangerous than it would’ve been if religion hadn’t played a role.

What about THE CHIMERA (the person)?
The Fort Withervale residents who knew Chimera in life have started to view them as less of an individual person and more of a symbol. To each person, Chimera is a different thing — a different person.

This is how they have coped with their disappearance. To everyone, Chimera was a symbol of hope — a way back to the life they lived before the apocalypse… and when they [supposedly] died, that hope died with them.

HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE AGENCY

The Humanitarian Assistance Agency (often nicknamed HUMAS) is the governmental organization that rules over modern Canada, USA, and Mexico. HUMAS is an authoritative dictatorship. It is a massive military power that prioritizes soldiers and repopulation above all else.

The Repopulation Program
The repopulation program pairs “Breeders” up with soldiers. Breeders are any men and women that are put into the program (either via Loonie “recruitment” or genuine interest.

Breeders are forced to take vitamins that increase their libido and fertility. They are essentially owned by their assigned soldier and are heavily sedated if they start to show signs of disobedience.

Breeders are chosen by soldiers. The breeders who are not chosen are kept on fields as labor slaves and, occasionally, are brought out for COBRA patients to prove their loyalty to HUMAS. HUMAS officers order their brainwashed soldiers to brutally kill these slaves.

If there is any perceived hesitation -- even the tiniest moment -- the COBRA patient is brought back to the bunker and punished.

Operation: COBRA
Operation: COBRA is a rumored agency within HUMAS that specializes in brainwashing resistant Loonies to turn them into obedient and devoted soldiers for the military.

Operation: COBRA is an agency within HUMAS that focuses on brainwashing Loonies and disobedient soldiers through sensory deprivation, hypnotic techniques, and necessity deprivation.

COBRA patients are kept in an all-white padded rooms in a military bunker with large solar-powered radios repeating the mantra:
"YOU WILL OBEY. YOU WILL PAY PENANCE. YOU ARE BAD. OBEY."

COBRA patients are only allowed to eat one meal per week until they start showing signs of cooperation. By rewarding compliance with the chance for survival, COBRA patients quickly find themselves more and more willing to obey until they can't fight against HUMAS anymore.

LOONIES

Loonies (Lunatics) are lone wolves that don’t belong to any faction. They have received bad reputation because of radiation-crazed Loonies (which is where the name came from), but most are just trying to survive.

Radiation
Radiation poisoning kills most who contract it, but there are few who are able to withstand it for extended periods of time.

The radiation poisoning deeply impacts the psyche and leaves permanent damage on the brain, getting rid of the person’s survival instinct and impulse control completely.

Most Loonies are harmless.
